The TNBRD (Tamil Nadu Board of Rural Development), India is a Non Governmental Organization, registered under Societies Registration Act 1860 in the Year 1978. The vision of the Pioneer, the late Shri. L.Vedapuri was to transform lives of the the rural people by developing and adopting integrated approach in the key areas such as Agriculture, Education, Health and Rural Development.

The TNBRD has evolved a long journey over 38 years to its present position due to its dedication to its core values and serving the rural population in the areas of its reach. The TNBRD presently works in Thiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram and Krishnagiri districts of Tamil Nadu.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi after seeing the best services of TNBRD and contribution to the rural community sanctioned Krishi Vigyan Kendra, a farm science centre in tow districts- one at Thiruvannamalai and the other at Krishnagiri. (The approximate total value of both the project was 2.5 crore/ 450,000 USD). Both the Krishi Vigyan Kendras are working for the technology transfer to the farming community by implementing various activities including technology demonstration, trainings and short term research since 1991.

Prime Minister Kousal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)

The Tamil Nadu board of Rural Development, Chennai in association with National Skill Development Corporation, New Delhi has been implementing the Prime Minister Kousal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) in Thiruvannamalai and Krishnagiri districts.

Our Focus

Agriculture

Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for more than 60% of the population in Tamil Nadu. The state has an area of 1.39 lakhs km with a gross cropping area off 63 lakhs ha. But the production of field and other commercial crops have been reduced due to poor rainfall, labour shortage…

Education

TNBRD, Chennai also working for rural education and youth development in Krishnagiri and Thiruvannamalai district since its inception. About 150 villages were covered in both the districts of Tamil Nadu so far.

Health

To create awareness on the child health aspects for the rural poor in Thiruvannamalai and Krishnagiri districts. For that the board is maintaining a close relationship with the department of public health and sanitation in order to organize health camps and other related programmes in the villages.

Rural Development

Encourage the grass root rural poor to work as communities in all the developmental activities on the needy basis. The board aims in the formation of SIGs, CIG and FIG on a large scale in rural areas in order to bring the desirable changes in the skills, knowledge and attitudes.

Case Study

System of Rice Intensification in Thiuvannamalai district

A new method of cultivating paddy to increase the yield with advanced technologies gained interest of farmers of Thiruvannamalai district. The method involves low seed rate, square planting, cono weeding and leaf colur chart based nutrient application. About 60000 hectares have been converted under this method out of 1.25 lakhs hectares in Thiruvannamalai district by continues efforts shown by Department of agriculture. Success Story

Drum seeder-Low cost method of planting in paddy

The drum seeder is one of the successful low cost and labour saving method of planting paddy in Thiruvannamalai district. The TNBRD has taken all the methods in popularizing this technology for the benefit of farmers of the district along with Department of agriculture, Agricultural experts of various departments and scientist from KVK. The detailed study reveals that the average seed cost, labour and the crop duration have been minimized considerably by following the drum seeder technology. More…
